During Gamescom 2022, Sonic Frontiers got a new trailer with a first look into the story of the game. With the release of the newest trailer, more people have been talking about if this game will actually be good?
Sonic Frontier is being advertised as an open zone type game. You can think of this similar to Mario 64 or Mario Odyssey where Sonic will have the ability to go to different zones where each will present different challenges. Back in July, Saga released a gameplay trailer of the game. It was highly criticized because the game looked empty. The video showed Sonic running around in the world, fighting enemies, and interacting with some buildings. In the background, you can see wide open and empty space. For an open world type game to be good, it needs to keep the player engaged with different enemies, buildings to interact with, and some types of quests scattered about. People started spicklating whether or not this first look into the game was an early build of the game or if this was new. If this was a new build, people were saying the game should be delayed because of the past experience of 3D Sonic games.
3D Sonic games in the past always had trouble. Either the story was not good, looking at the game where Shadow was dual wielding guns, the game was very very broken, Sonic The Hedgehog, or the developers had a hard time translating sonic from 2D to 3D, Sonic And The Black Knight. Fans do not want a game that is forever broken. They want a true Sonic that is fun and fast paced to fit sonic.
The trailer released during Gamescom seems to have squished most doubts of the game. The story looks engaging, the world looks interactive, and the gameplay looks fun. In the background of all shots of the open world, you can see different rails to grind, buildings to run up, and ramps and floating rocks that Sonic would assume to be able to interact with, making the world and traversing it much more fun. In the trailer, we also see some classic 3D Sonic level design which looks fun to go through. After watching this trailer, I feel much more hopeful about the release of this game on November November 8, 2022. The only thing we are missing from the game so far is Big the Cat's Fishing minigame.
